Veteran British actor Michael Denison, renowned for his very English roles in dozens of films and theater productions, died July 22 of cancer at his home in Amersham, England, with his wife, Dulcie Gray, at his side. He was 82.
Denison and Gray formed one of the most famous and long-lasting husband-and-wife show business partnerships. The team, married 59 years, appeared in more than 30 productions in London’s West End. They made their Broadway debut two years ago in Oscar Wilde’s “An Ideal Husband.”
The director of that production, Peter Hall, said last week that Denison was “a very complete actor” and added, “Because he was very much a gentleman-actor, people could very easily underestimate what a consummate technician he was.”
Denison was educated at Harrow before going to Oxford. He married Gray in 1939. His acting career was suspended for six years when he served in the army in World War II.
